Vases
Exploring personal narratives of queer love and desire; the series of vases consider the act of gifting flowers as a gesture of love, to explore the ways that social norms surrounding relationship can be played with and subverted. Made using non-traditional glass blowing techniques to create organic, irregular shapes; each vase reflects a different experience in realising and reconnecting with attraction and desire.
We start a brand new life, I’d never get lonely, 2024, hand blown glass and flowers
With a weighted base and narrow, twisting neck, We start a brand new life, I’d never get lonely speaks to a time of yearning and reaching out for connection, whilst having difficulty sustaining romantic interests due to unresolved baggage around desire. The work speaks to the challenging process of unlearning and relearning that often comes with growing into yourself as a queer person. While the tapered, winding neck of the vase tries to stretch away from the base, makes it difficult, but not impossible, for flowers to reach the water.
Baby, I will ‘cause I really want to, 2024, hand blown glass and flowers
Attempting to capture the oozing movement of glass in its molten state, Baby, I will ‘cause I really want to has a soft, organic shape, with dips and dimples in the glass. Its lounging pose speaks to giving in to and fully appreciating feelings of desire and being desired, after previously being uncomfortable with attention.
Everything around her is a silver pool of light, 2024, hand blown glass and flowers
Made as a tumbler shape with a frilled edge, rather than a traditional vase form, Everything around her is a silver pool of light, refers to childhood crushes that weren’t identified as crushes until years later in hindsight. The bright, sunshine yellow evoking the naive excitement surround a friend that just had something magical and special about them, while the pinched turned over edge mimics frilly lace socks.
With one look you take me back to everything I used to be, 2024, hand blown glass and flowers
With its twist tall neck, With one look you take me back to everything I used to be, recalls the giddy head in the clouds feeling of a new crush. In the piece, coloured glass fritz was added with movement to create a dappled effect, capturing the butterflies, excitement and nerves of a new crush, particularly after repressing previous feelings.
